Make:SF Jan 11th at TechShop SF

Hello Makers,

Happy New Year! We are kicking it off with an introductory overview of MakerBot 3-D printing. Thanks to Ponoko and a handful of members who contributed we have access to a MakerBot at Tech Liminal, and we’ll bring it with us to TechShop SF

At this month’s FREE meeting we’ll cover at a high level:
- A brief overview of the types of 3-D printing
- When is printing to a MakerBot the right tool for the project? (benefits and limitations)

The steps required to bring your project from computer bits to physical atoms!
- Modeling (download a model | design your own object | scan a real object)
- Slicing (turning the solid model in to paths for the Bot to follow)
- Printing we’ll cover in a bit more detail: Powering up, testing and calibration, Setup, Print!

Given the time required to print an object we won’t have time for everyone to print something.

Also we want to see all the neat stuff you made this year so come with your best project and show it off! See what everyone else has done and get ideas for future Meetups.

This fun-for-all-ages event starts at 6:30pm. Children under 14 need to be accompanied by an adult.
(OK, this event will be a bit tech-heavy, but we do welcome anyone to come and see how it works first hand.)

New to Make:SF? Here is what you can do:
- New to making? Come and explore with a fun mini-project.
- Have an idea? Come and we will help you get started making it.
- Making something? Come and demo it. Get feedback and network with the Makers.
- Come to see the speakers we bring in talk about their projects, tools you can use, etc.

Thanks for joining our group! Keep us going strong by chipping in! Pay your Jan-Jun dues online today! (If you payed in December, you’re all set.) You can also pay cash or credit card in person at the meeting.

Recap: Oakland meeting

Trying to figure out the instructions on a wearable text display

Trying to figure out the instructions on a wearable text display

Had  a great meeting at Tech Liminal in Oakland. It was the kick off for Electroween. They will be meeting every Tuesday night in October. Stop by and work on your costume, or other Electric Halloween projects.

Makation – The Folsom Powerhouse

I took a vacation up to Folsom California for my birthday. My wife thoughtfully planned in a trip to The Folsom Powerhouse.

Abstract
The Folsom Powerhouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (1981) as being significant in the areas of engineering and industry on the national level. It has been said that it represented a momentous advance in the science of generating and transmitting electricity. In 1895 the facility brought high-voltage alternating current over long distance transmission lines for the first time. It is also a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark (1975), a National Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark (1976) and is designated as California Registered Historical Landmark No. 633 (1958).

You could really see how it was made and how it works… I suppose it was back before they everything in a metal box.

It was pretty neat to see, and a great Makation!

I took a few photos

Have suggestions for other Makations? Send them to “meetings at make sf dot org” or click the link above.

October Events

There is so much going that I don’t want anything to get bumped down the page.

Make:SF Meetings in October:

10/6 at TechLiminal… we are joining them for Electroween stop by every Tuesday night to continue work on your projects.

10/13 at reMake Lounge… this months meet up.

BONUS

10/10 at reMake Lounge Soft Circuitry workshop. Participation requires signup, more details on their calendar

Soft circuitry is a great way to take your crafting to another level! Whether you’re coming at it as a craftster who wants to add a little extra spark to their creations, or as someone who’s handy with a soldering iron and circuitry, but wants to learn more about wearable crafts, this workshop is for you.

We take simple circuits and LEDS, and replace the solder and iron with conductive thread. Using simple hand-stitches, you’ll learn how to integrate LEDs into your sewing projects. The final results are lightweight, flexible, washable and wearable. The techniques you learn here will open up your crafting to a world of possibility.

This workshop will cover the very basics of using conductive thread, and creating a simple circuit between a battery and an LED. $20 includes all materials and refreshments. Registration Required. (Free parking and right next to BART/Muni!)
