Local Robotics Workshop April 12-13

We’ve [Make Magazine] teamed up with David Calkins, the founder of RoboGames and president of the Robotics Society of America, to offer an intensive weekend workshop exclusively for MAKE subscribers. The course will take you through the process of building your own android step-by-step. At the end of the weekend, you’ll leave with a 1-foot-tall working, programmable android of your own.

Where: San Francisco State University
When: April 12-13, 10AM-6PM each day (Lunch is included.)
There are only 20 slots available, so reserve your slot soon.
(Two people can share a slot, but they must also share a robot.)
You will need your MAKE account number to reserve your spot.

Class outline

Day 1: On the first day, you’ll learn about servos, the workhorse of all robotics. This includes the basics of pulse width modulation, and servo positional control via feedback loops. From there, we build our robot!

Day 2: Programming the robot. The robot comes with a full GUI which allow you to fine servos, create positions for the robot, and link positions into lengthy motion routines. By the end of the day, not only will your robot walk, but you’ll be able create your own motions – making the robot dance or do kung-fu moves. The kit also includes a full SDK for experienced programs who want to make their own software for the robot.

There are only 20 slots available, so sign up soon to reserve your space! Note that up to 2 people can share a slot, as long as they also share a robot.
Sign up at the Maker Store.
You will need your MAKE account number to reserve your slot.

We hope to see you there!

Cheers,
The Make Team

P.S. Maker Faire is coming up May 3-4 at the San Mateo County Expo Center. It’s shaping up to be the biggest and best Maker Faire ever, featuring RoboGames, Swap-o-Rama-Rama, aeronautics, crafts, food makers, life-sized mousetrap, 19-foot tesla coils, and much, much, much more! Discounted advance tickets are available now at http://makerfairetickets.com

Next Meeting April 6th

I had hoped to get a meeting together for March 16th in San Francisco, but for a number of reasons was not able to pull it off.

The next meeting will be at TechShop April 6th… (Contact me at the email address above if you’d like to present!) followed by a San Francisco meeting on April 20th.

More to come!

The Make:SF Wiki is up!

March 2nd Meeting

Hello Makers!

The next meeting at TechShop is coming up quickly! Last month we had a great turn out of 35+ people. As with the last meeting we will be featuring projects by local makers, and that means YOU!

Flight Controltest

See images of the prior meetings  (Sorry, still figuring out how to let WordPress post images from the server…)

Do you have a project you’d like to show, are you prepping something for Maker Faire and need collaborators? Or perhaps starting off on a new effort and need some idea about where to get that right bit of obtanium? Share your thoughts with other local makers. We will have a video projector this time… (Thank you TechShop!) and I’ll bring a video camera so that we can zoom in on the details.

Send a message back to me at meetings (at) makesf.org to reserve a 20 minute slot. We still have plenty of T-Shirts to hand out to presenters.

As with the last meeting where we got to see Shape Lock prototyping material: (Thanks for the free samples!!!)

I’ve invited a local business to bring in something of interest to makers. (Materials, tools, hackables.)

This month’s meeting we will have a Pleo robotic dinosaur… with the skin off so that we can get a better idea of how it works. One of the engineers who developed the inner workings will be joining us to answer questions:

Margaret Lee, a Ugobe project managers brought Pleo to the Mars Bar for the San Francisco meeting and it drew quite a crowd.

I look forward to seeing you at TechShop
Sunday March 2nd 2-4pm

(Tours of TechShop are available after the meeting if you have not been there before.)

Getting Social…

Facebook as a Group
LinkedIn Group Direct link to the group invitation(updated)

More of an experiment than anything else, but it should help network people together and find the meetings.

First and Second Meetings on the Calendar!

Hi Makers,

The first and second meetings are now on the calendar. The first meeting will be more informal… get to know you kind of thing. The goal is to brainstorm for the second meeting on January 6th 2pm also at TechShop. Make will be providing some hardware goodies… more details to follow, stay tuned!

Thanks again to TechShop for hosting!!!

Howdy Bay Makers!

Just now setting up shop…

Planning on a meeting this weekend. Stay tuned for details.

If you would like to lend a hand in planning, blogging, or if you are a WordPress wizard (the blog software used to make this site) please email the address in the header… I will get mail at that address.

My goal is to keep the meetings as inclusive and open as possible.

-Andrew

(My to do list)

1. Post the goals to this site. I have them written down, but not presentable yet.

2. Find a location for a the first meeting this weekend. (Suggestions? Email above, I have ideas and will pursue them on Monday… and post the meeting time and location ASAP.) The first meeting is a bit on short notice, I know we are all busy with the holidays, but no time like the present. There will be at least one a month, so if you miss one you can count on more. (Recaps will be posted to the site.)

3. Start (and link to) a forum on theMakezine site for Make:SF

4. Install a Wiki on this site.

5. Clean up the headers… “Mail” may go away.

It’s a work in progress. Stay tuned!

(Special thanks to Make:NYC for the Make style theme used for this blog!)
